Postdoc Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in health research and health care. You develop and conduct research aimed at understanding PPI as a social phenomenon, with a particular focus on evaluation.

Dit ga je doen

This four-year post-doc position is created to develop new knowledge on patient and public involvement (PPI) and as such contribute towards PPI as an area of evidence-based social-practice. The UMC Utrecht and University of Utrecht share a strategic goal of connecting worlds: the worlds of patients and their loved ones, students, staff (medical and academic) and the community with the overall aim to improve people’s health and health care. An important element in this strategy is patient and public involvement (PPI).

In your role as post-doc PPI, you study new and ongoing collaborative research projects and health care innovations aimed at facilitating patient participation at the UMC Utrecht. Your tasks include study development, study inception and research conduct, manuscript writing, and grant writing. In addition, you develop new research ideas to further the field of patient and public engagement in research and care. Many of these research activities will be conducted in partnership with patients, relatives, and members of the community.

As post-doc at the Department of Bioethics and Health Humanities, you are willing to supervise incoming PhD students and contribute to the intellectual life at our department. A small part of your work will be spent on teaching medical humanities courses (0,1 FTE) to (bio-) medical students at undergraduate, and graduate level, supervising students, advising colleagues setting up research in partnership with patients and relatives, and support tasks for the team Bioethics and Health Humanities and/or the Julius Center, such as for example the journal club and writing retreats.

Hier ga je werken

This is a four-year post-doc position at the Department of Bioethics and Health Humanities, Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care at the UMC Utrecht. At this department we operate in an interdisciplinary field, including (but not limited to): humanities, social sciences and arts.
The department hosts full professors, associate and assistant professors, and over 15 PhD students. We participate in various research projects, in teaching and (international) advisory boards and committees. Your supervisor will be Prof. dr. Astrid Janssens, Professor Patient and Public Participation.

Dit neem je mee

You recently (in the last two years) obtained a PhD in Social Sciences, (Medical) Humanities, Life Sciences, Bioethics, or Philosophy. You have a good track record in research related to patient and public involvement and or democratisation of health research. You have experience collaborating with patients, relatives and or members of the public in research activities (e.g. developing research questions, design, data collection, dissemination, conferences). You can set up and perform academic, empirical research. Experience with qualitative research is a must as well as a good understanding of the health care system. You thrive in an international, multidisciplinary environment, work well independently, communicate effectively, and have excellent didactic, written and verbal English skills. You are willing to obtain these skills in Dutch within two years after starting the position. As you
will be working with patients, relatives and or members of the public, candidates who meet the criteria and are fluent in Dutch will be prioritised.

Due to vacation, Astrid Janssen is absent until July 24. In the meantime, you can contact Ingrid Hille (+31 6 31 11 78 46) with general questions. You can email Astrid (a.v.a.janssens-14@umcutrecht.nl) for job-specific questions. She will answer these after her vacation.
